Book review: Becoming

Becoming is a worthy read! The memoir of Michelle Obama came out this past November and has been making record sales numbers. I enjoyed every page of this book! It felt, in some ways, like closure. For those of us who love Michelle Obama, the 8 years of her as the First Lady just didn't feel like enough. Once I caught wind that her book was being released, I thought, "Yes, now there's more!" The book is set up in three parts, first focusing on her early life, then her years meeting and uniting with Barack, then the white house years. She skillfully accomplished having a memoir that captured her life and focused on her despite how difficult that is to do when your husband is Barack Obama. What I found most appealing about the book was how she captured the ordinariness and extraordinariness of her life. I could relate to her fascination with dolls, her fumbles through the social spheres of childhood, and her value of friendship. Yet as relatable as her life seemed, it was clear that she was going to be great. That to me is the amazement of Michelle Obama, her ability to be someone you think of as a friend but a friend that you know will be more. Most of all, I am so grateful to have had a first lady that allowed me to feel visibly reflected in the highest realm of politics and who inspires me, still, to strive! Bravo to the forever FLOTUS! Thank you for being a friend (in my head!)
